Whoever guards his mouth and tongue
Guards his life from distresses.
Proverbs 21:17
Life and death are in the power of the tongue.
About a week ago I wrote a blog post about the things we say to ourselves and how it impacts our lives. Today, I’m gonna go a little farther with that.
It’s no secret that music has the power to influence our mood, thoughts and actions. As I’ve grown to be more conscious about the music I listen to, I notice the lyrics a lot more and many of the songs I used to listen to would make me cringe now.
Don’t judge me, but I used to jam out to Lana Del Rey and then would wonder why I was so depressed. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, you’re not missing anything.
With me also being a karaoke singer, I’ve had to cut back significantly on the songs that I would perform– in some cases I swap words like dying to crying if it’s just one or two instances and everything else passes.
All the songs have to be vetted though. The way I see it: if we have to someday give an account of every idle word spoken, I don’t wanna take any chances with music.
This is just one of the ways I guard my tongue and my life has honestly been a lot less distressing.
I’m not perfect in every situation; currently I’m trying to tone back on saying jokes that pop up in my head. I’ve learned that not everyone has the same sense of humor as I do, but that’s a whole ‘nother thing.
Here’s my challenge for you: next time you hit shuffle on your playlist, pay extra attention to the words.
So long!
