How Heavy is Your Load?

lighten your load

Cast your burden on Yah, and let Him sustain you;
He never allows the righteous to be shaken.

Psalm 55:22 (TS 2009)

Running a business is not as glamorous as the YouTube and Instagram influencers make it out to be.

I may not be making $10 million dollars a month in my twenties, but I honestly don’t think I’m even ready for something like that.

Even with my modest cleaning business and its modest profits, I find myself obsessing over a number of different decisions– should I hire or not hire; should I file or not file; should I target this customer segment or that one.

They aren’t hard decisions per se, just unfamiliar ones; but overtime they become draining.

I’ve recently found myself asking the Creator:
“How do I cast my burdens on you?
And how do I allow myself to be sustained?”

Here are three things that have come up since…

1. Set your direction

Pr. 16:9
Proverbs 16:9

The first step is to determine your goal and to start moving towards it. It’s tempting to go down several rabbit holes of research before taking that first step towards something, but this is often just a form of procrastination fueled by fear of the unknown.

If you decide to drive from one town to another, there may be road work happening on the planned route but you don’t know until you get there. Then you realize you have to take a detour so you go around the obstacle and continue on until you reach your destination. Life is no different.

2. Commit to your values

Pr. 16:3
Proverbs 16:3

Deeply consider the intentions behind your pursuits. Sometimes you’re just chasing things for the wrong reasons and they’re not meant to work out. Some people may seem to prosper in unethical behaviors, but your life is guided by a different standard.

Know what your values are and stick to them. If your values can easily be swayed then they’re nothing more than emotionally-charged preferences. Values, much like your commitment to the Creator, are things you carry until the day you die.

3. Shun the distractions

1Cor. 14:33
1 Corinthians 14:33

Whenever you commit to a goal, distractions will arise. It’s inevitable. These are to make you second guess yourself, and to see if you were really committed to begin with.

Sometimes you can desire a distraction so much that it can keep you from finding your true direction. One way to tell is if that thing is causing you pain and confusion. If so, it may be time to start at Step 1 and reevaluate.

Conclusion

Life has its ups and downs.

We all know this.

The important thing is to do your best and trust that God will get you the rest of the way so long as you’re sincere. In the end, it’s all about having faith that He is both able to carry our burdens and that He is willing to sustain us when we seek to please Him.
